Pauletta Putzki Evans' Obituary
Pauletta Putzki Evans, born in Washington, D.C. on October 21, 1932, died November 12, 2018, at home in Milton, Delaware. A third generation Washingtonian, she was the daughter of Dr. Paul Stirling Putzki and Eleanor Jackson Putzki and the husband of Robert Butler Evans. She was predeceased by her sisters Barbara Putzki Grogan and Anne Putzki Golden.
Pauletta’s father, Dr. Putzki, was chief of surgery at Doctors Hospital, Providence Hospital, and Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington. He was a graduate of Central High School (1911) and George Washington School of Medicine (1915). He served in the Army Medical Corps in World War I and subsequently practiced medicine in Washington for over five decades.
Pauletta’s grandfather was noted Washington artist Paul A. Putzki, who, at the invitation of first lady Mrs. Benjamin Harrison, moved to Washington, D.C. from Indianapolis in 1890 to open an art studio and teach fine and decorative arts classes in the White House.
Pauletta graduated from Sidwell Friends School in Washington (1950) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1954). At Sidwell, Pauletta was a star athlete and was chosen to be a member of an all-metro women’s basketball team. Later, as a member of the Chevy Chase Club, she was a champion platform tennis player.
Pauletta and her husband Bob, who was president of American Financial Services Association in Washington, raised their two daughters, Eleanor Duff Evans and Susan Evans Middleton, in Washington.
Pauletta was an assistant to the headmaster at Holton Arms School from 1980 to 1988, and served for many years as a candystriper at Sibley Hospital during the 1970s. Pauletta was an avid bridge player and an excellent cook. She enjoyed sailing and gardening with Bob, both at home in Washington and in Lewes, Delaware, where the family spent every summer. She was a member of St. Columba’s Episcopal Church in Washington and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes.
In addition to her husband of 64 years, Pauletta is survived by her daughters Eleanor, of Falls Church, Va., and Susie, of West Tisbury, Mass. She leaves behind sisters-in-law Vera Evans, of Philadelphia, Pa.; Elisabeth Ann Evans, of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and Randi Evans, of Bethesda, Md.; as well as 14 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes, Delaware on Saturday, May 4, at 11 a.m.
