Paul Issac Nichols' Obituary
Paul Isaac Nichols passed away on Friday, December 4, 2009 after a long battle with diabetes. An artist and teacher, he was an exceptionally patient, kind and quiet man who will be greatly missed.
Born February 9, 1927, Paul was the son of the late Albert B. and Lillian V. Nichols of Rutherford, NJ. A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the Navy and served on LSM-112 in the South Pacific. After the war, he graduated from Newark State Teachers College, and later earned a master’s degree. For more than 20 years, he taught industrial arts at Hillside High School in Hillside, NJ. Paul also taught driver’s education—a story proudly told by his wife and former student, Barbara C. Lewis, who he married in 1953.
While teaching, Paul always held interesting summer jobs, such as painting houses and churches. In 1971, he relocated his family to Easton, MD, where he taught industrial arts at Easton Middle School for another 16 years. He moved to Seaford, DE, in 1989 where he enjoyed time in his workshop, at the beach, gardening, woodcarving, model boat building, fishing and painting.
Descended from a long line of carpenters and shipbuilders, Paul loved the water and used his woodworking talents to construct actual boats and scale models. He was a member of the Radio Controlled Boat Model Club in St. Michaels for many years. His models of Skipjacks, Chesapeake Bay workboats and other custom boats were featured at local gift shops and art shows. Some were produced as kits and sold nationally through Horizon Design in Easton.
Paul was a longtime member of Trinity Cathedral in Easton, and recently attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Georgetown, DE.
Paul was loved by his wife of 57 years, Barbara; daughter Lisa N. Martin and her husband Harry of Denton; son Paul I. Nichols Jr. and his wife Laurie of Lititz, PA; son William B. Nichols and his wife Lori of Chambersburg, PA; and grandchildren Katherine and Jennifer Martin, Carol and Patricia Nichols, and William, Lindsey and Margaret Nichols. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William A. Nichols of Delray Beach, FL, and Albert B. Nichols Jr. of Mendham, NJ.
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (East Pine & Academy streets, Georgetown, DE 19947) will welcome friends and family at 9 a.m. Wednesday, December 9. A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a short ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery (26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE 19966).
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association (P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312).
Thanks to the staff at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and Seaford Genesis Center, and Bradley T. Lemon, M.D., for their support.
