Patrick "Paddy" John Moore's Obituary
Patrick John Moore, 71, passed away in hospice at the home of his sister Kate Fallon in Lewes, Delaware, in the early morning of June 14, 2024. Paddy, as he was known to all, was lovingly surrounded by family in his final days. He had quickly succumbed to cancer, which had gone unnoticed and undiagnosed for far too long, leading to its devastating spread and Paddy’s untimely demise. Paddy passed in his sleep without pain.
Patrick John Moore was the first born son to John and Catherine on October 29,1952. He was a true son of Yorkville, from his baptism at the Church of St. Joseph and basketball games at Carl Shurz Park, to his running up First Avenue in multiple New York City Marathons, cheered on by family and friends. He loved “the neighborhood,” the people he’d met in it, and the inviolable friendships he’d made there, which lasted his lifetime.
Paddy was proud of his achievements. His First Place win in a freckle contest at “Rhinelanders” at age 8, his becoming a member of the 82nd Airborne, and his years of service as a police officer with the NYPD. Yet he was most proud of his sons, Matthew and Andrew and the time he had with them. He loved his children deeply and spoke often of their achievements. He is survived by his children, their mother Laura, and his siblings Margaret, Kate, and Kevin.
Paddy loved being Irish too, his red hair, freckles, and devilish good looks were a clear giveaway of his ancestry to anyone who laid eyes on him. Paddy visited Ireland a few times in his life and was looking forward to visiting our ancestral homeland to “smell the turf fires one last time,” but sadly that did not come to pass. Paddy loved looking to the heavens at night and could point out constellations and planets. In his final days, he enjoyed the sky of the early mornings and in the quiet stillness he focused on the birds as they greeted him with their songs of solace.
Paddy also loved the beach, the Montauk lighthouse, and seafood of all kinds. He retained fond childhood memories of summer vacations on Long Island, where our family spent the dog days of August at the Jo-B-An Cottages in Shinnecock Hills. There Paddy relished in summer friendships and the endless carefree freedom of long beach days filled with swimming, crabbing, and fishing at the canal. We will spread Paddy’s ashes sometime this August in the waters off Shinnecock as he had requested of us. Because as Paddy loved so many things… he too was loved.
