Patricia Beckett-Effort's Obituary
Patricia was born in North Tarrytown on December 21, 1939, and her journey through life was one of compassion, dedication, and service.
Patricia graduated from North Tarrytown High School in 1957 and went on to attend Westchester Community College. Faith was an integral part of her life, and she actively participated in churches in Tarrytown, NY. She found solace and purpose within the walls of the Church of St. John the Evangelist in White Plains.
Influenced by her grandmother, Alice Thomas, and her mother, Lena Beckett, Patricia dedicated herself to fostering children. From 1961 to 1979, she collaborated tirelessly with Cardinal McCloskey School and Home, as well as other foster care agencies in Westchester. Her home became a haven for several foster children, providing them with love, stability, and hope.
Patricia’s commitment extended beyond her home. In May 1972, she played a pivotal role in organizing the NAACP chapter in Tarrytown, NY. As Secretary, she attended conferences, and meetings, and tirelessly reported back to the Tarrytown members. Her dedication to civil rights and equality was unwavering.
She also served as a Tarrytown Red Cross volunteer from 1975 to 1978 and was a board member from 1978 to 1980. Her involvement in ATT Communications, the White Plains, NY Board of Education, Live Oaks Condominium Board of Managers, and the Telephone Pioneers of America highlighted her leadership and commitment to community betterment.
On August 31, 1991, Patricia married Reginald (pre-deceased) and together, they relocated to Lewes, Delaware in 2000. Their love was a testament to enduring companionship and shared dreams.
Patricia leaves behind her foster sister, Sylvia Chaleman-Lindo, and Tina Washington, a precious friend, Patricia’s circle of cherished friends will also keep her memory close.
