Nelson P. Guidry's Obituary
Nelson P. Guidry, age 90, of Lewes, DE, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2006. He was born in Gueydan, LA to the late Armantine & Elia Guidry. Mr. Guidry and his wife Ruby celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this year.
During WW II, Nelson was a cartographer aboard the USS Ancon, an auxiliary command ship where he made maps for part of the invasion of Okinawa.
He was a Foreign Agricultural Economic Geographer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. One of his publications was translated into Japanese and Spanish and was also printed in a geography textbook. Oxford University has reprinted two of his maps. He retired in 1973 after 36 years of service.
After living in Maryland for over 35 years, Nelson and Ruby moved to Lewes in 1985. He became active in the Lewes Senior Center and drew up the architectural plans for the building on Nassau Park Road.
He was a member of Birmingham Lodge in Maryland, Jefferson Lodge in Lewes, as well as a member of the Rehoboth Beach Lions Club and Bethel United Methodist Church.
Mr. Guidry was survived by his wife Ruby Guidry by five hours who died on April 3, 2006. He is survived by his son Philip N. Guidry of Dover and his daughter Claudia Hakala of Severna Park, MD.
Funeral Services and Masonic Services will be held on Thursday, April 6, 11 AM, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 129 W. Fourth Street, Lewes, DE, together with services for his wife Ruby Guidry, with Rev. Jack Cohen officiating. Interment will follow immediately at Bethel Methodist Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
