Ned Brooks Martin's Obituary
Ned Brooks Martin, Sr., age 82, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, DE, surrounded by his family. He was born February 29, 1928 in Hornell, NY, son of the late Harry J. and Edith E. (Norton) Martin.
Mr. Martin was a 1946 graduate of Hornell High School. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army to serve his country specializing in radio ops and he was an expert rifleman. Upon completing his tour of duty, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Business from Alfred University, New York. He enjoyed a 35 year career with Equitable Life Assurance ultimately serving as a Re-Insurance Manager. His career included working in Grand Rapids, MI and New York City. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to Lewes where Ned went to work for the Marine Reporting Program, University of Delaware, College of Marine Studies.
Ned was a Renaissance man who enjoyed playing the clarinet, traveling, fishing, exploring the area, gardening, boating, classical music and the magic of ham radio. He was a member of the Lewes Lions Club and Bethel United Methodist Church. He was devoted to his family and especially enjoyed the company of his seven poodles. His three grandsons, however, won over his heart and were the apple of his eye.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlotte E. Martin; son, Brooks Martin, Jr. and wife Sally of Norton, MA; grandsons: Tyler, Mitchell and Derek; niece, Sandi Hanley and husband Jim of Wilmington, DE; nephew, David Chesler and wife Laurie of Wilmington; and his beloved poodles.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 21, 2011 11:00AM, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 129 West 4th Street, Lewes, DE, where friends may call beginning at 10:00AM. Interment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, 100 W. 19th Street, Suite 1002, Wilmington, DE 19801 or to Bethel United Methodist Church at the aforementioned address.
