Mildred "Mickey" D. Spano's Obituary
Mildred D. “Mickey” Spano
Mickey Spano, 89, of Lewes, DE, died on Monday, July 20, 2015, at Bebee Hospital with her daughters by her side. Mickey was born and raised in Caerphilly, Wales, United Kingdom. She met Cosmo J. “Joe” Spano during WWII. He returned after the war to marry his beloved Mickey, and they returned to the U.S. and made their home in Washington, D.C., and then Adelphi, Maryland.
Mickey is survived by her daughters, Barbara S. McArdle of Rehoboth Beach, DE, and Robyn E. Spano of Alexandria, VA, as well as a sister in Wales and brother in Australia. She is predeceased by her husband of 52 years Joe Spano, two sisters of Caerphilly, Wales, and a brother of London, England.
For nine years Mickey enjoyed her life at Cadbury of Lewes and she leaves behind many dear friends, caring staff and her very special friend Doris Schirk. Mickey moved to Lewes after living in Annapolis, MD, where she lived after relocating from Surfside Beach, SC, following Joe’s passing in 1998.
Mickey retired in 1986 after a career with the Laborers’ International Union of North America. Over the years she was active in her church and with social organizations of WWII war brides who came to the U.S. You would seldom find Mickey without a book in hand or busy with a knitting project.
Mickey will be remembered for her kind heart, generous nature and quick wit. A memorial service to celebrate Mickey’s life will be held at Cadbury at Lewes
17028 Cadbury Circle, Lewes, DE 19958, at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 30. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Butterfly Garden at Cadbury:
