Michael Eugene Myrtle's Obituary
Michael Eugene, "Mike", "Papoo", Myrtle, age 78 of Bethany Beach, DE, passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2021. He was born in Hyattsville, MD on January 22, 1943, son of the late Charles and Alice (White) Myrtle.
Mike graduated from Carroll High School, received his undergrad degree from the University of Maryland, and went on to American University to achieve his graduate degree. He proudly served in the United States Navy was on active duty on the USS Borie during the Vietnam War.
Mike built a career in the Maritime Administration, working for the Department of Transportation for over 36 dedicated years. After his retirement, he began working summers for Bethany Beach Parking Enforcement. He loved walking the miles of scenic Bethany, but more so, the conversations with all the business owners and vacationers.
Mike was an avid fisherman and loved watching Maryland basketball. He loved music, and one could always find him listening to his favorites: Billy Joel, Roy Orbison, and The Carpenters. Mike enjoyed coastal living and everything it had to offer. He especially liked being on the water and boating. A true lover of animals, Mike never met a dog he didn’t like. Above all, Mike cherished time spent with those he held most dear. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his brother, John Myrtle. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Anne L. Myrtle of Bethany Beach, DE; his children: Peter Beauchamp of Carlsbad, CA, Christine Deerin of Kensington, MD, and Michael Myrtle of Alexandria, VA; his grandchildren: Ella Beauchamp, Kingsley, and Ford Deerin, and Presley Myrtle; and his siblings: Chip Myrtle, James Myrtle, Mary Klarfeld, Martha Kinsey, and Edward Myrtle.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at 10:00 AM at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 9705 Summit Avenue, Kensington, MD, 20895.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mike's memory to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at www.komen.org.
