Michael L. Monack's Obituary
Michael L. Monack, age 96, of Millsboro, DE passed away on September 22, 2016 at Renaissance Healthcare, in Millsboro, DE. He was born on July 8, 1920 in Charleroi, PA, son of the late Anthony and Anna Monack.
Mr. Monack was a native of Charleroi, PA where he attended public school. He was a 1942 graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in metallurgy. There he was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity and was elected to Sigma Phi Epsilon and Phi Lambda Upsilon honorariums for metallurgy and chemistry.
Mr. Monack joined the DuPont Co. in 1942 in the Engineering Department’s Technical Division, an elitist group of chemical and metallurgical engineers. In 1946 he was transferred to the Consultant Section where he held various technical and managerial positions.
He was considered one of the pioneers in the use of plastics as engineering materials in the chemical industry and was a very active speaker on various aspects of materials engineering at technical society meetings and at several universities. He retired in 1978.
He and his wife Nancy were life-time members of the DuPont Country Club where they enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and dining with friends and family.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Monack was predeceased by his beloved wife of 73 years, Nancy, and his sister Vivian Dixon.
He is survived by his his two sons: Mike Monack and his wife, Maureen of Chesapeake City, MD and Larry Monack and his wife, Kay of Millsboro, DE; sisters, Elaine Keefe of North Carolina and Roseann Wolfram of Michigan; his brother Donald Monack of Connecticut; his five grandchildren: Kevin and his wife, Stephanie, Michael, Brian and his wife, Angela, Jillian and Nancy; and his four great-grandchildren.
