Michael Matera Jr.'s Obituary
Michael "Mike" Matera Jr., 89, of South Bethany Beach, DE, passed away peacefully at his residence on March 8, 2025. Born June 18, 1935, in Riverside, New Jersey, Mike was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to his family and community.
Mike began his career as a lineman for PSEG in New Jersey and later became a volunteer firefighter. After retiring from PSEG, he worked as a real estate agent. Throughout his life, Mike was dedicated to service and was a respected member of his community. He served proudly in the National Guard and was instrumental in founding the South Bethany Beach Town Watch Committee and the South Bethany Beach Beautification Committee. He was also a past president of the South Bethany Beach Homeowners Association.
An outdoors enthusiast, Mike enjoyed hunting, boating, crabbing, and the occasional trip to the casinos. His contributions to his community and his family will be remembered. Mike will be missed by all who knew him.
Mike is survived by his son, Gary Matera Sr. (Dawn) of Selbyville, DE; daughter, Diane Matera (Steven Lamb) of Fort Myers Beach, FL; grandson, Gary Matera Jr.; granddaughters, Alicia Burns, Laurie Jenkins, and Chelsea Barbely; great-grandsons, Robbie Everham, Jayden Jenkins, and Jackson Barbely; great-granddaughters, Chloe Burns and Olivia Barbely; sister, Elaine Vogelman; and foster daughter, Rose Wilson Macfarland. In addition to his parents, Michael Matera Sr. and Mildred Rhoades, he was predeceased by his wife, Marie Doris Matera (Kovalesky); his siblings, Joseph Matera and Louise Rodano; and foster daughter, Terrilee Wilson Brennon.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Millville United Methodist Church, 36405 Club House Road, Millville, DE 19967. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will be held privately.
