Michael Angelo Carta's Obituary
Michael (Mike) Angelo Carta, age 91, of Lewes, Delaware, passed away of natural causes on June 30, 2022.
Mike was the beloved husband of Ellen; loving father of Debbie (Greg), Michele (Matt), Michael (Terri) and Mary Ellen (Mark); wonderful grandfather to Jessica, Zachary, Matthew, Shannon (Hunter), Christopher (Kristin), Gabrielle, Michael, Anna, Olivia, and great grandfather to Riley. Mike is also survived by his brother, Joe (Joan) and sister, Janey (Jim) and preceded in death by sisters Julie, Joyce, and Mary Lou.
Mike was born on June 20, 1931, in Washington DC to Salvatore and Cecilia Carta, Italian immigrants who instilled in him strong character, ethical values and a deep and unwavering love for family. He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School, where he was a gifted athlete excelling in three sports. Mike then served in the United States Air Force and continued his very patriotic ways throughout his entire life. Mike began his career in the banking industry and worked for Perpetual Bank for over 35 years as Vice President and Branch Manager.
Mike married Ellen (Greenawalt) in 1956, and started a family shortly, thereafter, settling in Silver Spring, Maryland before moving to Berwyn Heights, where they lived for over 40 years. Mike loved spending time with his loving wife, family, and friends. He enjoyed sports over his entire life, playing on many different men’s softball and basketball teams. He was a very active member of the Berwyn Heights Men’s League (BHML) and enjoyed the comradery every Sunday. After retiring, Mike and Ellen moved to Lewes, Delaware where he joined the Olde Tymers Softball of Delmarva League (OTS). He played and managed softball teams well into his 80s and was recently voted into the OTS Hall of Fame in 2020. Mike adored his grandchildren and followed their academic and athletic careers, actively attending their games, school functions, and was a pivotal part of their lives. Mike was a huge major league baseball and national football league fan, and he was most passionate about the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Redskins.
Mike’s Italian roots showcased weekly through his love of sharing a meal with family and friends. He was deeply rooted in his faith as a devout Catholic and was proud of his beliefs, always finding time to volunteer at his local church. Mike was a loving husband to Ellen, whom he considered his very best friend. Married for over 65 years, they enjoyed vacationing in Cancun, Mexico and did so for 30 consecutive years. Mike’s greatest accomplishment, however, was being a selfless father and an amazing role model to his children Debbie, Michele, Mary Ellen, and Michael. He was a positive force in both his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. His motto was always to “live and love” & “don’t sweat the small stuff” and this was exactly how he lived his life. Mike always put family and friends first and thought of their interests before his own. Mike’s children and grandchildren called their dad and granddad a superhero, and even as adults, continued to see him that way. He was there for them through various challenges; taught them to reach for the stars and enjoy every moment life has to offer. Mike had a positive and infectious energy which those around him appreciated immensely. His family and friends respected him and were blessed to have him in their lives. He made everyone around him a better person through his kindness, laughter, and love for life. Mike was a friend, mentor, role model to so many people. He led a long and very impactful life and will be deeply missed.
