Mary L. Melvin's Obituary
Mary L. Melvin “Patty,” age 93 of Ocean View, DE passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, January 6, 2010. Mrs. Melvin was born August 15, 1916 in Utica, NY, daughter of the late John Henry Loeffler and Mary (Keigh) Loeffler.
At a young age Mrs. Melvin started a lifetime of accomplishments. In 1934 upon her graduation from high school she was awarded a full scholarship to Smith College, Northampton, MA, (an all women’s school). With her degree in hand, she became a school teacher in Barnstable, MA. In 1942 she joined the United States Army, War Department, Intelligence Division, Washington, DC. Three years later Mrs. Melvin transferred to the National Security Agency in Arlington, VA where she worked for 35 years retiring in 1976 as a Management Analyst. Mrs. Melvin resided in Crofton, MD until 1994 when she and her husband relocated to Bethany Bay Development, Ocean View, DE. Mrs. Melvin enjoyed many activities at Bethany Bay and attended St. Martha’s Episcopal Church. Mrs. Melvin was a lady of few words who took everything in. She lived life to the fullest and she especially loved spending time with her husband, whether on the golf course or the beach.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Melvin was preceded in death by her son, John Michael Melvin. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Lloyd W. Melvin “Mike.”
The family would like to extend a special note of thanks to Mrs. Delores Drummond and all the staff at Delaware Hospice for their loving care.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Clarksville Chapel, Ocean View, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
