Mary Alice Landis Fleming's Obituary
Mary Alice Landis Fleming, age 104, of Lewes, DE passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at her home. She was born in Ardmore, PA on January 26, 1908, daughter of the late William P. and Mary Tinsman (Worman) Landis. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first and second husbands. Alexander S. Fleming (1985) and William J. Pickert (2010); her son Moro L. Fleming (1991); and four sisters: Emily L. Mathis, Josephine L. Ulrich, Julia L. Bryant and Elizabeth L. Pratt.
Mrs. Fleming was a graduate of Lower Merion High School (1927) in Ardmore, the Illman-Carter Training School for Kindergarten and Primary Teachers School (1929) in Philadelphia; and the Episcopal Church Training School (1931); Mrs. Fleming also attended the University of Pennsylvania from 1931-1937. She was a Kindergarten teacher at St. Martha’s Settlement House in Philadelphia from 1931 to 1935 and at the Penn Wynne School in Wynnewood, PA from 1935 to 1938. Her love of children led to the establishment of St. Christopher’s Nursery School in Gladwyne, PA at which she taught from 1961 to 1966.
Mrs. Fleming and her late husband Alexander retired to Lewes in 1970 where she volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She loved her many walks on the beach, swimming in the bay and all the amenities the beach life had to offer. Mrs. Fleming enjoyed relaxing with a good book or knitting that special something for someone. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose love will be missed by so many.
Mrs. Fleming is survived by her daughter Alice Seidel and her husband Manfred of Malvern, PA; her son Edwards A. Fleming and his wife Eleanor of Hummelstown, PA; daughter in-law, Sunsue Fleming; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
All services will be private. Arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
