Mary Elizabeth Casseday's Obituary
Mary Elizabeth Casseday, age 87 of Lewes, DE, passed away on Monday, March 8, 2021 at her home, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. She was born on December 13, 1933 in Wilmington, DE, daughter of the late Andrew Oliver Nickle and Mary Elizabeth Webster Nickle Kavanaugh.
Mary grew up in Wilmington and moved to Lewes in 1982. She built a career with the Wilmington Trust Company, retiring after 25 dedicated years. Mary was very involved in her church and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) since 1988. She was proud to have held office within DAR and assisted 41 members with their genealogies. Mary was very patriotic and even participated in a Naturalization Ceremony. She was a steadfast supporter of her family, even driving one of her husband’s race cars in a Powder Puff Derby. Her support was continual, standing by her husband and son when they established Below Book Auto ~ even though she wanted to retire! Mary also wrote a book for her family about their genealogy. She had a green thumb, evidenced by her beautiful gardens and meticulously landscaped surroundings. Above all, Mary cherished time spent with those she held most dear. She was a loving and devoted mother, sister, aunt, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Robert H. Casseday; and her son, Robert C. Casseday. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Harry Sheing; her sister, Mildred May McClure; her brother, Andrew Oliver Nickle, Jr.; her sister-in-law, Christiana Martin; her brother-in-law, Harry Casseday; and her many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Tammy Mumford and her team for their devotion to Mary’s care up until her last minute, and to Tiffany from Delaware Hospice.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday May 22, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Chester Bethel Cemetery, 2619 Foulk Road, Wilmington, DE.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing must be observed and masks must be worn by all participating in any aspect of the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
