Martin "Marty" F. Duffy's Obituary
Martin F.(Marty) Duffy, 77, passed away peacefully on Monday 2-16-15, at home in Rehoboth Beach DE.
He fought a vicious battle with Alzheimer's disease for the last 12 years and succumbed to its nasty pervasive clouding of the mind. The love and care provided by his wife Nancy during those difficult years will always be appreciated and remembered by all of his family.
Marty was born on 9-19-37, the first child of Manus and Winnie Duffy, in the Forty Acres, and at the early age of 6 emigrated a half mile north to the Highlands of Wilmington.
Marty graduated from St. Ann's School and Archmere Academy where he participated on the baseball and basketball teams and where he was known to many as the “One Man Weave!”
Marty Joined the Air Force in 1958 and was honorably discharged in 1960. He spent the next 40 years working in many supervisory and managerial levels with Delmarva Power.
While working at Delmarva Power, he received an award from then President Ronald Reagan in 1988 for implementing “Radio Watch,” a national program of roadside surveillance and reporting of stranded and disabled vehicles by integrating communications between utility truck's radios and local police.
Marty was predeceased by his parents, his daughter Susan and his sisters, Mary Jo Maucher and Winnie Rhoads.
He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 50 years, Nancy, his daughter Maureen, his son Michael and Blythe, his grandchildren Katie, Megan, and Paige; and his great granddaughter Aubree. He is also survived by his brothers John P Duffy and Geraldine of Freehold, NJ and Manus Duffy of Wilmington, DE, his brothers in law Kenneth Rhoads Rehoboth Beach, DE and Laurence Maucher, Salem OR, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins here in the US and across the pond in Ireland.
He enjoyed many years of golf with his cronies and was a founder of the Hagee's Annual Cotillion, held originally at Hagee's Tavern (otherwise known as the Mildew Room) on the banks of the Brandywine River.
He was a member of St. Edmond’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus 3rd degree, Star of the Sea Council.
His dry humor and wit will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the caregivers of Compassionate Care Hospice and CHEER, for their years of wonderful care, keeping Marty as comfortable as possible.
A Memorial Mass will be held on March 21st, 2015 at 11:00 am at St. Edmond Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE, where friends may call at 10:30 am at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Marty’s memory to Compassionate Care Hospice, 28467 Dupont Blvd., Millsboro, DE 19966.
