Martha Jean Addy's Obituary
Martha Jean Addy, 93, died peacefully in Lewes, DE on October 7 after a long illness. She would be best known to many in the Washington, DC area as the owner-operator of "Addy Sea" in Bethany Beach, DE through all of the 1960s and into the 70s. She retired from managing "Addy Sea" in 1973, when she and her late husband, Charles Edward (Ed) Addy, who died in 1985, came to live permanently in Bethany Beach. They had been living in Laurel, MD for the previous 20 years.
Mrs. Addy was born in Indianapolis, IN but lived most of the first 20 years of her life in Dayton, OH. She graduated from Bethany College in WV in 1936, and shortly thereafter married Ed Addy, whom she met while they were both students at Bethany College. They made their home for a number of years in Newburyport, MA.
She held a great fondness for the Bethany Beach community and was active as a leader in civic activities there, including several terms as the president of the Bethany Beach Women's Civic Association. She took special interest in the Bethany Beach Historical Society, the establishment of the Bethany Beach historical museum and the Sussex County South Coastal Library, as well as in activities to beautify the town. The Addy family was instrumental in the development of the Bethany Beach community in the early 1900s.
Mrs. Addy and her husband, as well as their immediate ancestors, were all lifelong members of the Disciples of Christ (Christian) Church. The Ocean View, DE Church of Christ was the spiritual home for her and her husband.
Survivors include her three children, John M. Addy of McLean, VA, William D. Addy of Preston, MD, and Christine Addy of Savannah, GA; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
