Mabel Jones Clifton's Obituary
Mabel Jones Clifton, 89,of Bridgeville departed this life Monday, March 6, 2006 at the Delmar Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Delmar, formerly Chancellor Care Nursing Home. Born March 10, 1916 in Greenwood, Delaware, she was the daughter of the late Fred C. and Georgia (Cannon) Jones, formerly of Greenwood.
Mabel was a graduate of Greenwood High School class of 1934 and the University of Delaware with a degree in elementary education. She taught in Bridgeville for 32 years before retiring in 1970. After retiring she enjoyed time with her husband, day trips with her friends and the special time she had with her cats. Mabel also found extreme pleasure in discussing her former students, their families and their accomplishments.
Mabel attended Union United Methodist Church, was a member of the Bridgeville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and the Bridgeville Historical Society.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years Byron "Filmore" Clifton who was also a teacher and coach in Bridgeville; a brother Charles F. Jones formerly of Greenwood; a cousin Lawrence Cade formerly of Greenwood; and her husband's nephew David L. Clifton.
She is survived by her sister-in-law Dorothy Jones of Greenwood; her cousins, Georgia T. Peterman of Delmar Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Delmar; Margaret Carey and her husband Norman of Delmar; Myrtle White and her husband Kenneth of Delmar; Roy L. "Larry" Peterman and his wife Sarah of Greenwood; Thomas R. Cannon of Harrington; Edwin Cade of Delmar; and her husband's nephew Frederick Clifton and his wife Connie of Leesburg, FL.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 11, 11 AM, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, 202 Laws Street, Bridgeville with Rev. Gary Tulak officiating. Interment will follow at St. Johnstown Cemetery, near Greenwood, DE. There will be no viewing.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Mrs. Clifton's memory to the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, 421 South Main Street, Bridgeville, DE 19933; or to Delaware Hospice Inc., 600 DuPont Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947; or to Union United Methodist Church, 2 North Laws Street, Bridgeville, DE 19933.
