Lynn Arnold Sprague's Obituary
June 16, 1949 – July 3, 2026
Lynn Arnold Sprague, 77, packed up his tools and moved on to the next project on Friday, July 3, 2026, at Cadia Renaissance in Millsboro, DE. Lynn was a man of undeniable charm who made a lasting impression on the many friends, colleagues, and communities he encountered throughout his life and varied travels.
The middle of three children, Lynn was born on June 16, 1949, to Norma (Zimmerman) and Frank Sprague in Gouverneur, NY. He graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1967 and earned a bachelor's degree in forestry and wildlife biology from Syracuse University in 1971. A lifelong learner who was always looking for the next horizon, he later obtained a master's in education from Fairfield University and a master's in marine studies from the University of Delaware in 1982.
Lynn dedicated his career to natural resources, serving within the Departments of Natural Resources and Soil & Water Conservation across Delaware, New York, and North Carolina, as well as Resource Conservation & Development networks nationwide and the National Association of Conservation Districts. Professionally, he was a force of nature—known for his deep passion for environmental conservation, his uncanny ability to deliver an eloquent speech entirely on the fly, and a knack for writing major grants in his sleep.
An outdoorsman from his youth, Lynn achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in his teens and always cherished time spent at his camp in Bolton Landing, NY. Music was another lifelong escape; he was a passionate drummer, starting in high school, marching with the Syracuse Minutemen Marching Band, and playing in numerous venues and bands over the decades. A fond family memory includes the times his children would each grab an instrument from his eclectic collection for impromptu family jam sessions. Lynn was also a relentless "Mr. Fix-It," constantly in motion, whether climbing a ladder, repairing a roof, or building a new project in his garage for his various rental properties.
Lynn’s legacy is carried on by his children: Heather Kennedy of Hockessin, DE; Sarah (Matthew) Beebe of Lewes, DE; and Andrew “Andy” (Kristyn) Sprague of Pittsburgh, PA; as well as his five grandchildren, Brooke, Cole, Andrew, Kirk, and Audrey.
In addition to his parents, Lynn was preceded in death by his son, Forrest “Woody” Sprague; his brother, Andy Sprague of Warrensburg, NY; and his sister, Bethany “BJ” Sprague of Davis, CA. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, sister-in-law Marie (Andy) Sprague, and his nieces and nephew.
A private memorial service will be held by his family at a later date, where they will quietly celebrate the best of his talents and find peace in his passing. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Special Olympics Delaware.
