Lionel David Saltzberg's Obituary
Mr. Lionel David Saltzberg, a long-time resident of Dover, Delaware, passed away July 9, 2022. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 3, 1930, to Kalman Gerson Saltzberg, and Reva Esther Joseph. His father, who left Czarist Lithuania in 1907, and his mother, a second-generation Chicagoan, met in Chicago in 1926 and were married the following year.
As a child, he lived in Montana, Texas, and Wyoming. The family moved to Illinois in 1942. He graduated from Waukegan Township High School in January 1948 and went on to the University of Wisconsin - Madison. In addition to receiving his Bachelor’s Degree, he was also commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U. S. Army through the ROTC program in June 1952. He served in Korea from January 1954 to February 1955 and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
After returning from Korea, he took numerous courses from the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force, specializing in Human Resources. He was employed by the Navy as a Wage and Classification Specialist in the Civilian Personnel Office in 1956. When he was offered a promotion by the Air Force in his specialty, he moved to Delaware in April 1968 and accepted a position in Human Resources at the Air Force base in Dover. After he retired in 1985, Mr. Saltzberg served as a Test Proctor for the Sussex Technical High School for ten years.
He enjoyed classical music, elegant cars, animals, and all the beautiful things that life had to offer. However, most of all he loved the “golden moments” with his family. He set high standards for himself in carrying out all that he did. He never stopped learning; he read, assisted where he could, and determinedly used his computer. He believed that one of his greatest achievements was learning to accept individuals as they are. Mr. Saltzberg was unique and beautiful of heart. He forever will be loved, missed, and remembered.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Saltzberg was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanette Frank; and his brother, George Saltzberg. He is survived by his siblings: Judith Pitkofsky and Zara (Howard) Myers; and by many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 18, 2022, at 11:00 AM, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, Delaware. Burial will be private.
