Leonard James Henry of Lewes, DE, age 80, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, with his sons Dan and Bryan at his side. He was born on July 4, 1942, in Island Pond, VT, the first son of Reggie and Carmel Henry.
Len spent his early years in Island Pond, moving with his family to Gorham, NH and graduating from Gorham High School, Class of 1960. It was in Gorham that he met the love of his life, Martha (Welsh) Henry, with whom he shared his life until her passing in 2017 after 55 years of marriage.
After graduating from Wentworth Institute of Technology, Len started his career with DuPont, and he and Martha eventually settled in Newark, DE, where they raised a family among many friends in Robscott Manor. When he wasn’t working, he was busy creating in his woodshop, painting, duck carving, or gardening. Len also loved fishing and was a proud member of the Hatteras Hookers. He always had time for family, spending many weekends camping and taking extended road trips up and down the east coast.
Upon retirement, Len and Martha settled in Lewes, DE. He enjoyed spending days on his boat on Rehoboth Bay and evenings in his backyard with Martha, watching the deer in the woods behind his house. He was active in the Homeowners Association of The Woods on Herring Creek and took pride in volunteering at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, where one of his favorite activities was teaching school children about Delaware’s natural resources.
In addition to his parents, Len was preceded in death by his wife, Martha; and by his infant brother Michael. He is survived by his sons: Dan and Bryan (Kim); by his grandchildren: Zaynah (Jeremy), Noah, Mollie, and Max; by his sister, Gina; his brothers: Tim and Chris; their families; and his loyal dog, Maisie.
