Lemuel Orme Meade's Obituary
Lemuel Orme Meade, age 97, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 22, 2010. He was born in Prince Georges County, MD, on June 15, 1913 son of the late Robert J. and Ola May Orme Meade.
Mr. Meade had formerly worked for the Western Electric Corporation of Baltimore, MD retiring after 30 years service. Thereafter he worked in the family hotel business in Rehoboth Beach. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII having served on a Destroyer Tender in the Pacific and American Theaters of Action. For his exemplary service he was invited to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. While on board ship he was a noted Checkers Champion. He was a devoted Christian and devoted member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, Rehoboth Beach, DE. As a young man, he enjoyed sports, especially running in track and field events and a noted, longtime fan of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team.
Mr. Meade was a gentle and loving man. He led an active life, committed to serving the community. He had served as President of the Rehoboth-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, and past President of the Lions Club and active member and lay leader of the Epworth Methodist Men. He had many loyal and loving friends. Mr. Meade is survived by his wife of 44 years Kathryn E. Rogers Meade, stepson Jeffrey E. Zerby, Sr. and wife Ruth Ann of Rehoboth Beach, DE; grandson Jeffrey E. Zerby, Jr. and wife Jennifer Macintire Zerby of Lewes, DE; granddaughter Wendy Zerby Truitt and husband, Chris of Harbeson, DE; great grandchildren, Kathryn J. Hearn of Newark, DE and Luke Wright of Harbeson, DE; and a niece Karen Mascus of Indianapolis, Indiana.
Funeral Services followed by military honors will be held on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 2:00 PM, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE, where friends may call one hour prior to services at the church.
Burial will be private at the Epworth Methodist Cemetery, Henlopen Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE, 19971.
