Kenneth Elmer Mitchell's Obituary
Kenneth Elmer Mitchell, age 85, of Lewes, DE, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2011, surrounded by his family. He was born in Lewes, DE, on December 21, 1925, son of the late Elmer O. Mitchell and Elizabeth (Blizzard) Mitchell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Lemuel Palmer, his sister Ella Klonowski and his step-father Murray Joseph.
Mr. Mitchell graduated from Lewes High School in 1944. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and served his country in World War II and in the Phillipines. He also worked as an Electrical Lineman for the Town of Lewes. He retired after working many years as Assistant Fire Chief at the Dover Air Force Base and he retired from Cape Henlopen High School after working as an Engineer.
He was an avid golfer, and he loved wood carving, painting with water color and gardening. Entertaining was his idea of fun with his joke telling and he was a strong swimmer who won several trophies in the Breakwater race.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. He also served as President of the Lewes Lion's Club, Commander of the American Legion Post # 5, a Mason with the Masonic Lodge #15 and a member of the Redmans Lodge in Lewes.
He is survived by his wife Ruth (Bailey) Mitchell, of Lewes, DE; three daughters: Linda Larrimore and her husband Joseph of Lewes, DE, Gail Merz and her husband Gary of Lewes, DE and Laurie Houston of The Colony, TX; and one sister Doris Lehman of Milton, DE; three grandsons: Joshua Esham and wife Patricia of Riverside, CA, Brian Quinn of TX, and John Kenneth Merz of Lewes, DE; one granddaughter Kathleen Quinn of TX; three great-grandsons: Matthew Esham, Riley Esham and Thomas Esham all of Riverside, CA and two great-granddaughters Melana Palmertree of TX and Kimora Quinn.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at 11:00 AM, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Second & Market Streets, Lewes, DE. Interment will be private.
