Joseph "PopPop" Dominick Vavala's Obituary
Joseph D. Vavala, age 97 of Dewey Beach, DE, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, DE. He was born on March 18, 1921 in Wilmington, DE, son of the late Dominic and Marie Therese (Voce) Vavalva.
Mr. Vavala was a proud US Army Veteran, having served honorably during World War II. He was an avid NY Yankees and Notre Dame fan, watching their games at every opportunity. Above all, Mr. Vavala was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Vavala was preceded in death by beloved wife, Anne Martin Vavala; his son, Larry Vavala; his brothers: Frank, Phil, and John Vavala; and his sister, Rose DiFrancesco. He is survived by his son, Bruce Vavala and his wife Eileen of Dewey Beach, DE; his grandchildren: Kris Vavala, Joe Vavala and his wife Allison; Samantha Vavala and Daniel Vavala and their mother, Michelle, of Parkland, FL; and his great-grandchildren: Lila Vavala and Thomas Vavala.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 11:00 AM at St. Edmond Church, 409 King Charles Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE, where friends may call beginning at 10:00 AM. Entombment will take place on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, DE.
