Joseph A. Mathews, Jr., AIA
Joseph Anthony Mathews, Jr. died peacefully on Saturday, September 27, 2008 surrounded by his loving family.
Born July 11, 1930 in Washington, DC to Joseph Anthony Mathews, Sr. and Mary Miller Mathews, he attended Holy Trinity Grade School. He moved to Rochester, NY and attended Aquinas High School where he excelled at the ski and rifle Clubs. He later returned to Washington, DC where he graduated from St. John's Military High School.
A graduate of Georgetown University, Mr. Mathews earned his mathematics degree in 1953 and later went on for additional graduate studies in meteorology at Oklahoma State in 1954.
Mr. Mathews served proudly in the U.S. Air Force as a Captain from 1953-1957. During that time he served as a meteorologist and was stationed at the United States Pentagon, Greenland and Lubbock, TX.
Upon his honorable discharge form the Air Force, he went on to pursue his degree in architecture and graduated from Catholic University in 1960. Upon graduation, he worked for several firms including Metcalf and Associates in Washington, DC as a staff architect and oversaw projects such as Anne Arundel Hospital in Annapolis, MD and the University of Lagos Medical School in Lagos, Nigeria.
Mr. Mathews later joined Mariani and Associates of Washington, DC in 1966 where he served as Vice President for 16 years until his retirement in 1986. Among his most favorite accomplishments as a staff architect included projects with: Georgetown University Medical Hospital, International Medical Center of Rabat, Morocco, and the Detention Facilities of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Naval Hospital.
His was a lifetime member of the NRA. He was a proud member of American Legion Post 5 in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
His immediate family includes: Nancy Renk Mathews, loving wife of 53 years of Rehoboth Beach along with their 8 children, 9 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild: Joseph A. Mathews III and his wife Lori and their children Joseph IV and Logan of Lewes, DE; Nancie Mathews and her son Eric and her grandson Joseph of Wanamie, PA; Mary Colburn and her husband Shawn and their children Shannon, Bridget and Patty Jo of Milton, DE; Kevin Mathews and his wife Jennifer and their children Emily and Luke of Clarksville DE; Esther Mathews of Rehoboth Beach; Sara Mathews of Rehoboth Beach; Ruth Mathews Shipyan and her husband Anthony and their daughter Ellery of Rehoboth Beach; and William Mathews of Rehoboth Beach.
Siblings include: Richard Mathews of Bethany Beach, DE; Mary Sciable of Millville, DE; Sally Hinkle of Ocean City, MD; Helen Delaney of Bethany Beach; Judy Brittingham of Rehoboth Beach; and Peggy Maines of Dun Loring, VA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at St. Edmond's Catholic Church, King Charles & Laurel Streets, Rehoboth Beach; friends may call at the church beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
Memorials may be made in Mr. Mathews memory to Belmont Abbey College, 100 Belmont-Mt. Holy Road, Belmont, NC 28012.
