Joseph "Whitey" F. Russell's Obituary
Joseph "Whitey" F. Russell, Sr., age 82, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE. He was born December 22, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA, son of the late Joseph A. and Helen Margaret (Patterson) Russell.
Mr. Russell served with the U.S. Army during WW II. He was a life member of VFW Post 7447, Rehoboth Beach, DE and a member of American Legion Post 17, Lewes. He was very involved in his community, Aspen Meadows, where he served as a former president of the Homeowners Association. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Russell was preceded in death by his wife Ida M (Shields) Russell (2005) and his son Daniel J. Russell. He is survived by his three sons, Joseph R. Russell, Jr. of Philadelphia, Edward J. Russell and his wife Susan M. of Langhorne, PA and Thomas M. Russell of Philadelphia; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, William Russell of Milford, DE.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 11:00 AM at St. Jude The Apostle Church, DE Route 1 north of Five Points, Lewes; friends may call at the church beginning at 9:30 AM. Interment will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE. The family will also have a Memorial Mass celebrated on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, 10:00 AM at St. Jerome Church, 8100 Colfax Street, Philadelphia, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Home of the Brave Foundation, 6632 Sharps Road, Milford, DE 19963.
