Joseph "Joe" A. Szefler's Obituary
Joseph "Joe" A. Szefler, Jr., age 64, of Lewes, DE passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at his home. He was born on February 4, 1951 in Bayonne, NJ, son of the late Joseph A., Sr. and Beatrice (Miller) Szefler.
Joe proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Upon his honorable discharge, he embarked on a lifelong career in sales. He began his career with the Philadelphia Ball & Roller Bearing Company in Philadelphia, PA where he worked for many years before moving to Lewes, DE. Here he continued his sales career, first with Lawson Products and later with Erco Ceilings & Blinds in Harrington from which he retired in 2005.
Joe was a member of the American Legion Post #5 in Rehoboth Beach, DE and the Four Seasons Motorcycle Club in Wilmington, DE where he was infamously known as "Papa Smurf."
Joe was a die hard Steelers fan and loved going fishing on the Delaware waters. He easily made friends with everyone and was known for his great sense of humor. His family and friends always looked forward to his 'joke of the day.' Above all Joe loved his canine companions. They were his everything.
Joe is survived by his beloved canine companion, Lucy; two nieces: Sandra Szefler of Millsboro, DE and Sheryl Hayes and her husband Ed, Sr. of Milton, DE; sister-in-law, Connie Szefler of Millsboro, DE and two good friends, Joe Morris and his wife Amanda and Michelle Elder all of Lewes, DE.
A Chapel Committal with Military Honors will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015, at 11:00 AM, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.
Memorial contributions may be made in Joe's memory to the American Legion Post #5, 300 King Charles Street, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
