John Joseph Williams' Obituary
John Joseph Williams, formerly of Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Delaware on June 16, 2026. He was 76 years old.
Born in 1949 to John and Julia Williams, John was raised in Philadelphia, where he developed a lifelong commitment to service. As a young man, he served his Catholic parish as an altar boy and participated in numerous church activities.
John proudly served in the United States Navy as a Boatswain’s Mate and Hospital Corpsman. During his military career, he completed three tours in Vietnam and traveled extensively throughout the world, including assignments and visits to the Philippines and Hong Kong. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he studied Physical Education.
A dedicated public servant, John spent much of his professional life with the
Philadelphia Department of Recreation, where he served as Director of Aquatics and mentored countless swimmers throughout the years. His passion for water safety and athletics led him to many other roles, including Waterfront Director at Camp William Penn, lifeguard for the School District of Philadelphia, coach, paramedic, American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, Training Coordinator for the Philadelphia Special Olympics, and active member of both the American Legion and the National Rifle Association. In recognition of his dedication and service, he received a Citation from the City of Philadelphia in 1991.
John was a devoted father, grandfather, veteran, athlete, and animal lover. He shared two children with Catherine Lopez and is survived by his daughter, Julie (Jovan) Cordero; his son, John (Victoria) Williams; his stepdaughter, Melissa Staszkow; and his five beloved grandchildren, Juliana, Jazleena, and Jubilee Cordero, and Henry and John Joseph Williams, who will proudly carry on his family name. He is also survived by many extended relatives and cherished friends who became family through the years.
John will be remembered for his dedication to service, his love of swimming and athletics, his compassion for animals, and his unwavering commitment to those he cared about. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In accordance with his wishes, his cremated remains will be scattered at sea. No services will be held at this time.
