John Herman Weiss, aged 78, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2023, surrounded by the love of family. He was born in Philadelphia, PA, on March 24, 1945, graduating from Caesar Rodney High School in 1964.
He served in the 125 Air Traffic Control Company, 25th Infantry as a Radio Teletype Crypto Operator in Vietnam. Following his honorable discharge, he was awarded the Purple Heart.
After the military, he worked at Reichhold Chemical Plant in Cheswold, DE. He retired after 35 years, later working for the Town of Milton.
John was a lifelong car enthusiast and loved to fish. Nature was his refuge. “Pa” cherished walks with his grandchildren and taking them for ice cream. John loved hummingbirds and found joy in capturing life’s beauty all from behind the lens of his camera. One of his photographs was featured on the cover of Beach Life Magazine. An avid runner, he completed the Buffalo Stampede, and seven marathons, with his favorite being the Boston Marathon. John loved Metallica, Terminator movies, cartoon character Marvin the Martian, and his sunglass collection.
John loved being with his family, and he touched many lives with his sarcastic humor and photography. Survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Weiss of Rehoboth Beach; his children: Megan (Jason) Spangler, Nicole (Scott) Pierce, Shannon (Ben) Faden, and Andrew (Shauni) Collins; his cherished grandchildren: Sloan, Emmett, Jensen, James, Jade, Kinzie, Olivia, and Asher. John is also survived by his son from a previous marriage, Andy (Carla) Weiss, and his sister, Nancy (Joe) Reichal. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman, and Margaret Weiss.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 5th, at 11:00 AM at St. Edmond’s Church, Rehoboth Beach, DE, with visitation starting at 10:00 AM. Military honors will follow at 1:00 PM at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in John's memory to the Sussex County VA Clinic, Georgetown, DE.
