Tubbs, John Townsend
On Tuesday, November 1, 2005, J. Townsend Tubbs died in Lewes, Delaware following a heart attack.
A life-long resident of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and part-time resident of Bethesda, Maryland, "Townie" Tubbs was the son of the late J. Asbury Tubbs and Edith Townsend Tubbs, and the grandson of the late John G. Townsend, Governor and U.S. Senator from Delaware.
Born February 2,1918 in Selbyville, Delaware, Mr. Tubbs attended Culver Military Academy, Lawrenceville School and Yale University. He was an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Atlantic.
After military service, Mr. Tubbs joined his father and brother, Bill, in the family lumber and construction business, Selbyville Manufacturing Company, eventually becoming President until the business was sold in the early 1980s. He also served on the Board of Directors of Baltimore Trust, which later merged with Mercantile Bank, and became Chairman of the Board. After retiring from the Board in 1993, he became a licensed agent with Jack Lingo Inc in Rehoboth.
Mr. Tubbs also served on the boards of the Rehoboth Art League and Rehoboth Beach Country Club. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing and was a frequent traveler.
His first wife, Marjorie (Teddy) Chapman Tubbs, died in 1966. His second wife, Jean Wire Tubbs, died in 1990.
He is survived by a son, John Townsend Tubbs, Jr. of Bozeman, Montana; four stepchildren, Marilyn Layton of Lewes, William C. Murphy of Washington, Michele Newman of Bethesda and Melinda Deay of Malvern, and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Monday, November 7,2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, Delaware.
