John E. Thorsen's Obituary
John Thorsen, age 86, of Lewes, DE, passed away February 17, 2010, at Cadbury At Lewes, with his loving family by his side. He was born November 4, 1923, in New York City, NY, son of the late Thor G. and Frances (Hansen) Thorsen.
John Thorsen was a true gentleman who made a significant impact in the lives of many.
John served in the US Navy as a Fire Control 2nd Classman, joining in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He subsequently obtained his Captain's license from the US Coast Guard. After serving in the military, he attended NYU where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business in 1950. He pursued a long career as President and owner of Queens Employment Service from 1953 until his retirement in 1992.
During his long professional career, John was honored with several outstanding lifetime achievement awards through both the YMCA of Greater New York and the Rotary Club of Queens.
John led his life in a spiritual manner and was an active member and President of the church council of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hicksville, New York prior to his and his wife Joan's relocation to Lewes, Delaware in 1997.
John remained dedicated to Joan, his lovely wife of 57 years and his three sons; Peter, Paul and James. He is remembered with love and affection by his daughters in law: Lisa, Kathy and Patricia. He leaves a legacy of strength, fortitude, loyalty and love to his 10 grandchildren: Kyle, Jennifer, Luke, Jake, Colleen, Amanda, Russell, Thomas, Grace and John.
John's quiet presence, sincerity and unselfish generosity will be missed by all; he will enter his new life with the love of this family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday February 20, 2010, 2:00 PM, at Lewes Presbyterian Church, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE, with the Pastor Harry Hughes officiating. Friends may call at the church beginning at 1:00 PM. Friends may also call on Friday, February 19, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE. A Prayer Service will be held on Friday evening at 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Lewes Presbyterian Church, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE 19958.
