John "Jack" M. McCarty, Sr., age 80, of Lewes, DE, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. Mr. McCarty was born May 16, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA, son of the late Pleasant and Mildred (Palmer) McCarty.
Mr. McCarty moved to Lewes as a young child and never left the area. He was employed by the Board of Public Works for 20 years. He and his wife then owned and operated Mac's Bait & Tackle shop in Dewey Beach for 25 years. Mac loved fishing and reading, especially horror and mystery novels. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Jefferson Lodge, Lewes. He had served in the Merchant Marines. He was a devoted husband and he loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sons, Patrick J. McCarty (2001) and Richard Alan McCarty (2005). He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Beverly (Howarth)McCarty; two sons, John M. "Jack" McCarty, Jr. and Michael L. McCarty, both of Lewes; his daughter-in-law, Carlie McCarty of Lewes; eight grandchildren: Shane McCarty and his wife Brenda, Tracey McCabe and her husband Clarke, Michelle Calvello and her husband Andy, John McCarty III, Jan Ezell and her husband Bryson, Jamie Johnson and her husband Bob, Ragen McCarty, and Pleasent J. McCarty; ten great-grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Donald Travis of Rehoboth Beach, DE; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 23, 2 PM, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, with Rev. Jeffrey Ross officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery, Pilottown Road, Lewes.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 2nd & Market Streets, Lewes, DE 19958 or to the Lewes Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 225, Lewes, DE 19958.
