John J. Malone's Obituary
John J. Malone, age 87 of Lewes, DE, passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2010, at Beebe Medical Center. He was born in Boston, MA, on Wednesday, November 14, 1923, son of the late John Joseph and Alice (Baker) Malone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Dolores S. Malone who died in 2005 and one grandson, John M. Malone.
Born in Boston, he graduated from S. Groveland High School and then from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1943. After graduation, he worked with the War Shipping Administration in England and France. He served as an officer in the US Navy and the Merchant Marines during WWII. In 1954, he joined the United States Lines for 14 years, which included being a terminal manager. In 1968, he joined the Philadelphia Port Corporation and in 1984, he was appointed its President. He retired in 1985. He later served as president of the North Atlantic Ports Association for the years 1986 and 1988.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Jarrell and husband David, Diane Farrow and husband Thomas, all of Lewes, three sons, John R. Malone and wife Mimi of Harbeson, DE, Dr. David Malone and Dr. Nancy Hykel-Malone of Newtown Square, PA and William Malone and wife Kim of Torrance, CA, eight grandsons and one granddaughter.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday, January 7, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium Atkins Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE. Friends may call at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
