John E. Meyer's Obituary
John E. Meyer, 83, of Lewes, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Harbor Healthcare & Rehab Center, Lewes DE. He was born in Jersey City, NJ, on Tuesday, July 30, 1929, son of the late John E. and Mae E. (Seelbach) Meyer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Meyer (2006).
Mr. Meyer proudly served his country with US Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He twice entered the service and attained the rank of Sergeant. He was a member of American Legion Post #28, Oak Orchard.
Prior to moving to Lewes 26 years ago, Mr. Meyer owned and operated an Exxon Service Station for 22 years in Tom's River, NJ where he pumped gas and repaired cars. Once settled in Lewes, John drove the DART bus and eventually the Lewes CHEER bus; John was known for his helpful ways and cheerful way.
He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Church Church and the Knights of Columbus, Council #13348; he was a 3rd degree Knight. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed fishing, traveling and driving the bus. He will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends.
John is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Margaret M (Caulfield) Meyer; three sons: John E. Meyer of Tom's River, NJ, James Meyer and wife Lynn of Reedsville, NC, and Jarrett Meyer of Salisbury, NC; two daughters: Nanette Randles of Chesapeake, VA and Genevieve Unger and her husband Shannon of Whiting, NJ; fourteen grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and two sisters: Lorraine Wean of Asbury Park, NJ and Barbara Rutan and her husband Peter of Red Bank, NJ.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 28, at 11:00 AM at St. Jude the Apostle Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes. Friends may call at the church beginning at 10:00 AM. Entombment with military honors will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Toys for Tots, Marine Corp League, Diamond State Detachment #704, Millsboro, DE, 19966.
