When we hired the Darr boys back in the 90’s to work at our family’s amusement park in Rehoboth Beach, I sensed that they were from “good stock”. After meeting their parents, I felt that my gut feeling about them was more fully confirmed. Chris and Josh worked for Funland for a number of years, so I was able to get to know them quite well, but I was able to interact with John and Linda only occasionally.
It wasn’t until after Chris married my niece, Erin, that I actually had my first real conversation with John while painting at the Darr residence in Hershey. I can remember feeling a bit uneasy when the conversation ventured into politics and even more so when we both realized that we had some differing opinions. It all went well, much to John’s credit, as we were able to agree to disagree in a respectful manner. Reflecting on our conversation and on subsequent interactions with John afterward, here are a number of notable attributes that made an impression; gentle, diplomatic, congenial, articulate, willing to listen, gracious, generous, and a contagious smile. Surely, there are many more.
These are qualities that produce good stock. Chris and Josh…you are fortunate to have had a Dad to pass these same qualities down to you. There is no doubt that your entire family will feel the void of a man of such strong character. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
