John J. Burns' Obituary
John J. Burns, age 91, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. He was born on February 20, 1924 in Newark, NJ, son of the late John and Elizabeth (O'Donnell) Burns.
Mr. Burns lived most of his life in Peekskill, NY where he graduated from the Assumption School and Peekskill High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Wasp during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, Mr. Burns embarked on a 36 year career with IBM, retiring in 1987.
Mr. Burns was a civic minded man, holding memberships in various organizations. While residing in New York, he was an usher for many years at Assumption Church. He was a Life Member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 462; a Volunteer and Life Member at the Columbian Hose Company #1 and Life Member of Putnam Northern Westchester Fire Police Association. He was a member of Cortlandt Engine Company Fire Department in Montrose, NY. After Mr. Burns relocated to the Delaware beach area, he became a member of the Elks Lodge #2540 in Lewes and the American Legion Post #28 in Millsboro.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Burns was preceded in death by his sister, Regina Burns, and his son-in-law, Robert Beshara. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Helen J. (Karpenski) Burns; and two daughters: Patricia Burns-Beshara and Maureen (Burns) Bovich and her husband Jack.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Assumption Church, 131 Union Avenue, Peekskill, New York 10566 at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, April 25, 2015. Interment will be private. Arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Volunteer Fireman’s Home State of NY, 125 Harry Howard Avenue, Hudson, NY, 12534, Attn: Admin.
