Joe D. Ruiz's Obituary
Joe D. Ruiz, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2024, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, DE. Born on January 3, 1945, in Hatillo, Puerto Rico, to the late Jose and Juana Ruiz, Joe's journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and a passion for the natural world.
Joe honorably served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War, a period that shaped much of his character and resolve. Following his military service, he embarked on a lifelong career as an architect designer and project manager for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Joe's remarkable talent and commitment were evident in his work, most notably in the Twin Towers, where he dedicated over 30 years before retiring.
Beyond his professional achievements, Joe was an active member of the Rockland County Dart League and the Nam Knights Motorcycle Club in Rockland County, NY. These associations were a testament to his camaraderie and community spirit.
An avid fisherman and lover of all things outdoors, Joe found solace in nature. He was often seen biking, bird watching, and fully embracing the beauty of the environment. Summers at Lake George in New York were particularly dear to him, where he cherished the time spent with his family. After retiring to Southern Delaware, he enjoyed everything that coastal living had to offer. Joe found his lake home here and nothing brought him more joy than being on the water and fishing out in his backyard.
In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his sister, Lillian Ruiz. Joe's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife of 10 years, Patricia (Whitney) Ruiz, his daughter Laura Norris (Jason) of Manorville, NY, his son Jason Ruiz of Thiells, NY, his stepdaughter Bridget Kenny (John) of Randolph, NJ, and his sister Nancy White (Warren) of Tampa, FL. His grandchildren, Pearl Norris, Isla Norris, Whitney Kenny, and Savannah Kenny will hold dear the memories of their grandfather, especially the lessons at the domino table, where he taught them strategy and the value of quality time, along with many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2023, at 3:00 PM at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 N. Bedford St., Georgetown, DE 19947, where friends may call beginning at 2:00 PM. Joe will be interred with Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
