Joanne T. Greenspun's Obituary
Joanne Thompson Greenspun, 90, of Medford Leas Retirement Community, Medford, New Jersey and Lewes Beach, Delaware, passed away Friday, January 25, 2019. Joanne was born October 8, 1928 in Lewes, Delaware, the only child of the late Admiral Joseph Greenspun and Margaret Marshall Greenspun. Being from a Coast Guard family, she attended several elementary schools and spent a few years at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. Joanne graduated as class Valedictorian from Lewes High School in 1946. She was a graduate of Wellesley College with a degree in Library Administration and earned a Master’s Degree from Drexel University.
After several years in the Philadelphia library system, Joanne was appointed Director of the Vineland Public Library in New Jersey in 1964. Through her efforts and perseverance, the City of Vineland authorized construction of a new state of the art public library located at 1058 Landis Avenue in 1976. Her insight, determination, and support also resulted in the creation of The Friends of Vineland Public Library, a volunteer organization which has raised funds throughout the years to help make the library a first-class facility. Joanne was honored by the Library Board upon her retirement in 1992 for her service and dedication.
After retirement, Joanne moved into Medford Leas in New Jersey, where she shared her time and organizational skills in the community Library and Gift Shop. She had a life-long love of the Arts, enjoying the Philadelphia Orchestra and excursions into New York City to The Metropolitan Opera.
Lewes Beach, Delaware was her home away from Medford for summer trips to visit family. She found pleasure in supporting The Lewes Historical Society over the years, working as a docent in the historical homes.
Joanne is survived by three first cousins: Mother Virginia of All Saint's Convent, Catonsville, Maryland, T. Rowland Marshall of Lewes, Delaware, and Peggy Hocker Lingo of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; and her community of friends and caregivers at Medford Leas. Joanne was a generous, loving cousin to generations of the Marshall family of Lewes.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, February 11, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Lewes Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joanne’s memory may be made to The Lewes Historical Society: 110 Shipcarpenter Street, Lewes, Delaware 19958.
