Joan Christine Mueller's Obituary
Joan Christine “Chris” Mueller (née Cottle), beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on February 3, 2026.
Born on June 10, 1944, in Roswell, New Mexico, to Sue Nankervis Cottle and Richard A. Cottle, a B-29 Air Force captain who served as a pilot in World War II and the Korean War, Chris spent most of her childhood in Elmhurst, Illinois. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of Iowa before following in her father’s footsteps into aviation. In 1964, she began her career as a flight attendant with United Airlines—a role she truly loved and one that reflected her adventurous spirit and warm, welcoming nature.
While based in Washington, D.C., Chris met Russell Mueller, a passenger on one of her flights and a captain in the U.S. Army. Their love story began in a time of uncertainty; they became engaged before he was deployed to Vietnam and married upon his return. As was customary at the time, Chris stepped away from her career to devote herself fully to her family.
She was a loving and dedicated mother to her daughters, Sue Winn (born 1969) and Karen Mueller (born 1973). The family lived in several places over the years, including Baltimore, Moline, Illinois, and Birmingham, Michigan. In each home, Chris created a life filled with warmth, friendship, and lasting memories. From long road trips in the family station wagon—soundtracked by The Lone Ranger, Neil Diamond, and John Denver—to snowy ski trips in Colorado, she made everyday moments feel special and adventurous. In the early 1980s, Chris had the opportunity to return to United Airlines as a flight attendant. This chapter brought not only renewed joy to her life, but also incredible opportunities for her family. Through her work, her daughters were able to travel widely—visiting Hawaii, England, and destinations across the United States—experiences that became cherished lifelong memories.
Later, following a medical retirement due to an injury, Chris once again showed her resilience and curiosity by returning to school and earning an associate degree in Computer Information Systems. She had a natural brilliance with technology, always staying ahead of the curve with the latest computers and cell phones—often passing her gently used devices along to her daughters.
In 1991, after her divorce, Chris made a new start near the ocean in New Jersey, and eventually settled in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. There, she built a fulfilling and independent life, surrounded by a close-knit community. Her friends and loved ones in Rehoboth Beach were like family to her. She was a member of Rehoboth Beach Country Club and active in her church, frequently attending Epworth Methodist Church where her faith deepened and was renewed.
Chris found great joy in volunteering and giving back. She supported organizations including the Rehoboth Art League, Beebe Hospital, and Leashes of Love, and she volunteered with therapy dogs visiting nursing homes. She had a deep love for animals and firmly believed in rescuing and providing loving homes for cats and dogs. She often said she wished she had a farm so she could care for as many animals as possible.
She also cherished time spent with friends, especially playing pinochle at the Lewes Senior Center, and enjoyed traveling, gardening, and exploring new places throughout her life. Chris had a love for life’s simple pleasures—beautiful jewelry, a good glass of wine, dinners at the club, and her favorite meals, especially a great steak or a slice of pizza. These small joys, shared with family and friends, were part of what made time with her so special.
She loved her family fiercely and unconditionally. She was a proud grandmother to Lucy (20) and Jimmy (17), who brought her immense joy. Chris is survived by her daughters, Sue Winn and her husband, Tim Winn, and Karen Mueller and her husband, Greg Spielman; her grandchildren, Lucy and Jimmy; her sister, Linda Cottle; her nieces, Heather and Tricia; her great-niece, Mackenzie; and extended family including cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sue Nankervis Cottle and Richard A. Cottle.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to her devoted caregiver, Geri Quinn, whose compassion and care brought Chris peace and comfort in her final years.
A celebration of life will be held on May 15th in Lewes DE, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) in honor of her love for animals.
Chris’s life was one of love, resilience, generosity, and adventure—a legacy that will live on in all who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
