Janice H. Weymouth's Obituary
Janice Hauft Weymouth
February 22, 1949 - January 2, 2012
Janice Hauft Weymouth of Rehoboth Beach, DE died of carcinoid cancer on January 2, 2012 at home with her loving husband, daughter and close family and friends. She was born in Washington, DC on February 22, 1949, daughter of the late Bud and Rosemarie (Corrado) Hauft.
Jan began working at National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1970 after working at the 4-H Foundation. In 1977, Jan began to work for the NIH Division of Space Management at a time of unprecedented growth.
From 1983 until 2000 she helped manage the NIH’s hospital, known as the Clinical Center (CC), space and facilities. So much new construction happened over 35 years that moving people and things became an important skill. The work was interesting, but it required the mindset of a politician, with so many institutes seeing patients and vying for space in the CC.
Jan was also instrumental in launching the CC’s hospitality services program, which retrained and redeployed existing staff to the front entrance and to three strategically located hospitality desks to welcome patients and improve customer service.
In 1999, approval was given to begin program and design work on what would become the Edmund J. Safra Family Lodge - a 34-room house for adult patients and their families at the CC. For four years, Jan continued her existing work while planning the interior design and management of the Safra Lodge. From 2004 to 2007 Weymouth served as the Executive Director of the Lodge and oversaw everything from construction to staffing. Jan’s colleague said Jan was the kind of person who knew how to get things done, in fact many people would refer to her as 1-800-CALL-JAN for almost any kind of information needed.
Jan is survived by her adoring husband of 41 years, Rob Weymouth; daughter Kristen; brother Richard Hauft; brother-in-law Kent Weymouth, Jr.; sister-in-law Charlotte Gallagher; and sister-in-law Dorothy Osborne.
Jan was a real people person and great friend. She lived life to the fullest. She was generous and thoughtful and always ready for an adventure and a project. A decorator extraordinaire, Jan was noted for her excellent taste and sense of style.
A remembrance and celebration of life will be held at Kings Creek Country Club, Rehoboth Beach, DE on Friday, January 6, 2012 at 1:30 PM. Casual attire. Arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Jan Weymouth’s name be made to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health for the Edmund J. Safra Family Lodge, 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20814-3999.
