Jane Elizabeth McFarland, age 84, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, formerly of Chattanooga, TN, died on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. She was born on June 22, 1937, in Athens, TN, the daughter of the late John Homer McFarland and Martha Virginia Read Obituary
Jane and I were in the same class, and same dorm at Smith. She was gentle and modest, and I'm afraid I underestimated her. Such a precious soul.
Jane was a lovely, lovely person, soft spoken, a real southern lady. She was quiet but always thoughtful of others, in many ways a role model for us, her dorm mates at Smith College. It is a pleasure to have known her. After her retirement, Jane, accompanied by her sister Nancy, took the time to visit us way up north in Mill River Massachusetts. It is a memory that we cherish. René, my husband, had never met Jane before but was enchanted by her.

Jane was my treasured friend from college, and we were lucky to have adventures together in our later years, in various spots in the USA, when libraries sent us traveling. She was wonderfully lively company, full of knowledge and insight, humility, and such rich laughter. My memories of our friendship resound. I'm so very sorry she's no longer able to do her share in making more of them with me. Nancy and your family, please know I'm sending sympathy and gratitude for the times I was privileged to share joys and surprises with Jane.
