Jane W. Hatter's Obituary
Jane Wheat Hatter, age 89, of Lewes, Delaware and formerly of Baltimore, Maryland passed away on June 10, 2017 at "Cadbury Continuing Care" in Lewes after a lengthy illness.
Jane was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of the late Edgar Wilson Wheat, Sr. and Carrie Hidey Wheat. She graduated from Forest Park High School and attended Goucher College until her marriage to Robert Porter "Bob" Hatter in 1947.
Jane and Bob spent their married life in Baltimore where Jane enjoyed decorating, gardening, and entertaining at her home. In the late 1960's, Jane and Bob became part time residents of Lewes, when they bought an old farmhouse in the town. They painstakingly rehabbed the house and outbuildings, as well as building additions to each of them. Jane also created a beautiful garden there. Their home had been on the Christmas Tour of Lewes and the garden was featured on the Lewes Garden Tour. In addition, Jane was a miniature enthusiast, creating many miniature themed rooms. She even built and furnished a dollhouse replica of their home in Lewes. The house was to scale and exact in every way, including the needlepoint rugs that she created to mimic her oriental rugs, the furniture she made to look like her antiques, the siding she applied to the exterior, etc.
After Bob's death in 1996, Jane became a full time resident of Lewes, embracing the life there and enjoying her many friends. She took a variety of classes, volunteered, and became a member of the Sussex Gardeners. In addition, she became a communicant of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Lewes. She moved to Cadbury in 2010.
In addition to her husband, Jane was predeceased by her brother, Edgar Wilson Wheat Jr.
She is survived by her son, William H. Hatter, and his wife, Mary Close "Scootsie" Hatter, of Churchville, Maryland and her son, Brian R. Hatter, and his wife, Lisa Scott Hatter, of Vero Beach, Florida. In addition, she is survived by a grandson, Alexander Scott Hatter of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Family and friends will honor Jane's life with a service at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 2nd and Market Streets, Lewes, DE on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.
