James Eugene Mechell's Obituary
James "Jake" Eugene Mechell, age 83, of Lewes, DE passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on January 1, 2010. He was born on September 15, 1926 in Chester, PA, son of the late Jack Mechell and Mary Kopko Mechell. Mr. Mechell retired from the Sun Oil Company in 1984 after many years of service as a boiler maker. He and his wife retired to Lewes in 1996. He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, Lewes, DE and was an Army Veteran of WW II and was stationed in the Philippines. Mr. Mechell was an avid fan of the Price is Right, played in many semi-pro baseball leagues during his lifetime, was an avid Yankees fan and was known by his many friends and acquaintances as the Greatest Fisherman in Delaware.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen L. (Carpenter) Mechell; three daughters: Beverly Bynes and husband Donnell of Georgetown, DE, Joanne Holdren and husband Lou of Durham, NC, and Diane Pokoy and husband James of Wilmington, DE; a son James Mechell II and wife Becky of Clayton, DE; brother Joseph Mechell of Homosassa, FL; 5 grandsons: Glen Drummond of Dover, DE, Sgt. Monty Drummond of Savannah, GA, Matthew Holdren of Durham, NC, Jon Emerson of Wilmington, DE, Michael Mechell of Clayton, DE; 4 granddaughters: Andrea Pettyjohn of Bridgeville, DE, Michele White of Mansfield, MA, Kaila Mechell of Clayton, DE, Laci Mechell of Clayton, DE; great granddaughter Delilah Pettyjohn and great-grandson Patrick J. Pettyjohn of Bridgeville, DE.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday January 8, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, Delaware Rt. 1 at Five Points, Lewes, DE where friends may call at the church beginning at 10:30 AM. Friends may also call on Thursday evening from 6-8 PM at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins- Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE. Burial with military honors will follow the Mass at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, Delaware at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers contributions are suggested to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963, or to the SPCA, 22918 DuPont Boulevard, Georgetown, DE 19947.
