James E. Mayben's Obituary
James Edward "Jimbo" Mayben, age 80, of Lewes, DE passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Beebe Healthcare, Lewes, DE. He was born in Washington, D.C. on May 13, 1934, son of the late Maurice and Nena (Hale) Mayben.
Mr. Mayben proudly served his country in the US Army from November 1956 through November 1959. While serving his country he married the love of his life, Joan Marie on May 10, 1958. He had attained the rank of Sergeant when he was honorably discharged. After serving his country his career path began as a Manager with Burger Chef in Cheverly, MD. Mr. Mayben would then enjoy a 25 year career as a Supervisor/Delivery Manager with Montgomery Ward Warehouse in Landover, MD, retiring in 1989.
He was a very community minded man. Mr. Mayben was a member of the Rehoboth Beach Lions Club and was a bowling coach for many years with Special Olympics. He was also an excellent carpenter, lending his skills in building the playground at Shields Elementary School in Lewes. He loved building decks and the smiles his woodworking would bring. Mr. Mayben was always available with hammer in hand to help local churches with small projects.
He loved traveling, hunting, bowling and fishing, especially with his grandchildren. Mr. Mayben was a Washington Senators fan in his early years but would later become a Baltimore Orioles fan to the bitter end. He was also an avid Washington Redskins fan and NASCAR enthusiast. Mr. Mayben's greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, especially sharing a good meal together.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Clarence, Allen and Robert "Bobby." He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan Marie (Selby) Mayben; 2 daughters: Debra Ann "Debbie" Dukes and husband Larry of Dagsboro, DE and Rhonda Lee "Ronnie" Pignataro and husband John of Milton, DE; 4 grandchildren: Timothy James "TJ" Miller, Nicole Marie "Nikki" Smith and husband Bennie, John Anthony "Tony" Pignataro and Jennifer Lee "Jenni" Pignataro; 4 great-grandchildren: Tyki Lamar "Ty" Spencer, Tykira Renee "Kira" Spencer, Tatiyana Marie "Tootsie" Spencer and Aliyah Elizabeth "Mimi" Smith, one brother Bruce Mayben of Gainsville, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 10:30 AM at Sussex East Manor House, 30769 Lewes-Georgetown Highway, Lewes, DE where friends may visit beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to West Side New Beginnings, 19801 Norwood Street, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
