James "Jimmy" Irvine Powell, age 69, of Rehoboth Beach, DE peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2016 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born on January 12, 1947 in Wilmington, DE.
Jimmy spent his childhood in Wilmington, graduated from Conrad High School in 1965 and the University of Delaware in 1970.
Jimmy was an avid and passionate golfer and sports enthusiast. He played golf on the UD team and won countless matches and titles including the 1972 Blue Hen classic and the 1975 Delaware Champions of Champions Tournament. Jimmy’s greatest moment in golf was winning the Delaware State Amateur Championship in 1976. He won major championships in the 1980s at both Hercules Country Club and Cavaliers Country Club. Jimmy's love for the game was infectious, as he made hundreds of friends and taught countless new and experienced players how to play and improve their games. Jimmy was a faithful supporter of the University of Delaware golf team, and the Delaware State Golf Association Scholarship Fund.
Jimmy was the beloved friend and companion for 36 years of Kathleen Price. He was the eldest son of Irvine Powell of Hockessin, Delaware and the late Lucie Lemal Powell. He leaves his devoted brother David Powell (Liz) of Cornelius NC; his sister Joan Powell Jenaway (Bill) of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania; step sisters Patti Emmanuel (Bill) and Gail Walls (Jim); step brother Mark Stevens; nephews Andrew and Charley Powell; nieces Katie and Lizzy Jenaway, and hundreds of dear friends.
A Celebration of Jimmy’s Life will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 11:30 am at Rehoboth Beach Country Club, 221 Westside Drive, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware State Golf Association Scholarship Fund, 20 W. Buckingham Drive, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
