James LaPenne Guenveur's Obituary
James LaPenne Guenveur, of Lewes, Delaware died Monday morning, October 18, 2010 at Beebe Hospital, after a short fight against pneumonia. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, February 9, 1924, to J. LaPenne Guenveur and Clare Maguyre, he is predeceased by his first wife Jane Sinclair Guenveur, his
sisters Louise G. Thornton and Margaret G. Sedwick. Margaret died Monday morning, October 18, 2010.
Penn graduated from Yale University in 1945 and served as Ensign in the US Navy, Pacific Theatre. Following his naval service, Penn returned to Wilmington to earn his Master's Degree in Engineering from the University of Delaware, where he taught Electrical Engineering for five years.
In 1956, he became the Director of Applied Physics at All American Engineering Company, retiring as Vice President of Engineering in 1969.
After moving to Rehoboth Beach in 1970, Penn returned to teaching engineering at Delaware Technical College retiring after 25 years. During this time he ran a real estate development company with his wife and partner, Lucy Sands Guenveur.
He participated in all the activities the beach area had to offer: golfing, boating, hunting, deep sea and surf fishing. He pursued these activities during the many winters he and Lucy spent at Burnt Store Marina, Florida.
He enjoyed researching family history having helped his wife gather the necessary documents on her family, the Sands, to establish their membership in the DAR. Last year he wrote The Guenveur Children Growing Up, memories of he and his six brothers and sisters.
Uncle Penn had an on-going relationship with his many nephews, nieces and their children. He was his niece Lauren Guenveur's advisor and guardian.
Penn is survived by his wife Lucy Sands Guenveur, his brothers Paul D. Guenveur of Lewes and Wilmington, Robert C. Guenveur of Brooklyn NY, his sisters Mary Jane Cox of Newport, RI and Clare G. Downes of Wilmington.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 22, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, DE Route 1 North of Five Points, Lewes. The family will greet friends at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 20274 Beaver Dam Road, Harbeson, DE (Route 23 near Angola)
