James Abbott's Obituary
James Edward Abbott, Sr., 81, of Townsend, DE, passed away peacefully on Nov. 1, 2006 surrounded by his family at the home of his son in Milton, Delaware. He was born on November 24, 1924, in Wilmington, DE son of the late Harry Wayne Abbott and Mary (Dailey) Abbott .
Mr. Abbott was a Navy Veteran of WW II. After returning from the military he served as a policeman for the City of Wilmington, DE. In the late 40's he went on to work for what is now known as DART as a bus driver, retiring in 1985. During his tenure at DART he had served as the Union Representative for Delaware and was an organizer of the American Amalgamated Transit Union in Washington, DC as well as serving as a federal mediator for the agency. He was a 32 degree Mason with the Harmony Masonic Lodge of Smyrna, DE. He was also a former councilman and Mayor for the town of Elsmere.
He is survived by his wife Dorothea (Spence) Abbott of Townsend, DE; two sons, James E. Abbott, Jr. and his wife Deborah of Charlotte, NC; J. Wayne Abbott and his wife Barbara of Milton, DE; five sisters, Evelyn Doughten of Milford, DE, Laura Abbott of Long Neck, DE, Jane Lines of Cherry Hill, NJ, Lois DiTeodor of Newark, DE, and Carol Virnelli of Milton; two grandsons, James E. Abbott III and his wife Jennifer of Lansdale, PA, and Nicholas Ryan Gauger; four granddaughters, Rachel Abbott of Carrolton, GA, Julie Ann Adams, Jamie Renee Gauger, and Jenny Lynn McFadden; and five great grandchildren, Megan Emily Abbott, Caitlin Ashley Abbott, Dillon Isaacs Adams, Madison Olivia Adams, and Brandon Joseph Kelly. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother, Roy Abbott.
Services will be held in the Chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City
Road, Bear, DE on Thursday Nov. 9, 2006 at 11:00 AM. with entombment following.
