J. Elizabeth Hitchens' Obituary
Julia Elizabeth “Betty” (Hobbs) Hitchens, age 106, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 13, 2012 at Atlantic Shore Rehabilitation & Health Center in Millsboro, DE. She was born August 15, 1905 in Laurel, DE daughter of the late Thomas and Caroline (Holt) Hobbs.
Mrs. Hitchens was a longtime resident of Georgetown, DE where she worked as a bookkeeper and, for many years, in the Office of the Recorder of Deeds in Georgetown. Mrs. Hitchens was also a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Georgetown and a member of the Class of 1923 Laurel High School, Laurel, DE. She loved to knit and play Bridge.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Hitchens, her son, John H. Hitchens, her daughter-in-law, Jean H. Hitchens, a sister, Dorothy Hobbs Greene, and a brother, Willard Hobbs. She is survived by her son the Rev. William B. Hitchens of Seaford, DE; three grandchildren: Jennie H. Ashby of Millsboro, Christopher E. Hitchens of Gaithersburg, MD and Julia H. Orescan of Landenberg, PA; and four great-grandchildren: Elissa and Leah Orescan and Jordan and Nicholas Hitchens.
A Graveside Service with Pastor John Van Tine officiating will be held on Friday, February 24, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Union Cemetery, intersection of Adams and Race Streets, Georgetown. Arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Georgetown.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 102 E. Laurel Street, Georgetown, DE 19947 or to the Georgetown Public Library, 123 W. Pine Street, Georgetown, DE 19947.
