Irene Safrit's Obituary
Lady Irene Laidlaw Safrit of Lewes, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at the age of 89. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Irene was the beloved daughter of the late Andrew and Isabella (Reid) Laidlaw.
Irene dedicated her life to caring for others, beginning a distinguished career in nursing in 1958. She faithfully served her patients until her retirement in 1992. During her career, Irene also spent two years as a substitute high school teacher and volunteered as an instructor for children with learning disabilities, reflecting her lifelong passion for education and helping others reach their potential.
Following her retirement, Irene and her husband, Tommie W. Safrit, made their home in Lewes, Delaware, where they built a life filled with faith, service, and community.
For more than 30 years, Irene was a devoted member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach. Her faith was evident through her many acts of service, including volunteering with the International Students Outreach Program, preparing meals for those experiencing homelessness, and lending her beautiful voice to the church choir. Music was one of Irene's greatest joys. She sang in the choir at every church she attended, participated in the Osher choir, and delighted in singing to her children and grandchildren, creating cherished memories that will live on in their hearts.
A lifelong learner, Irene enthusiastically embraced the many educational opportunities offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, where she attended classes on a wide range of subjects. She also gave generously of her time as a volunteer with VIA, the Village Improvement Association of Rehoboth Beach, continuing her lifelong commitment to serving others and strengthening her community.
Irene is survived by her beloved husband of 68 years, Tom; two daughters: Beverley (Al), and Barbara (Mike); five grandchildren: Marie, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Michael and Thomas; four great-grandchildren: Aidan, Ethan, Haley and Riley; and sisters-in-law: Jean, Nancy and Louise.
Above all, Irene will be remembered for her compassionate heart, unwavering faith, generous spirit, and deep love for her family. Her kindness touched countless lives, and her legacy of service, music, and love will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
