Irene H. Gilbert

Irene H. Gilbert, age 83, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, formerly of Hyattsville, MD and Alexandria, VA, died Monday, January 2, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE. Mrs. Gilbert was born August 6, 1922 in Duluth, MN daughter of the late Godfred and Nannie (Jonnson) Wallgren.
Mrs. Gilbert was of Swedish decent as her parents immigrated to the United States from Sweden. She was a member of the Cape Henlopen Senior Center and an avid bridge player.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gilbert was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert James Backer; her second husband, Zeke Hendricks; her son James Robert Backer; and her brother Norman Wallgren. She is survived by her husband Kenneth C. Gilbert; two sons, Thomas R. Backer and his wife Dottie of Rehoboth Beach, and Kenneth H. Backer and his partner Thomas Curry of Baltimore, MD; five grandchildren, Katie Shriver, Korrie Johnson, Robert Backer, Robert Adkins and Shelley Adkins; six great-grandchildren; and her sister Florence Godin of Woodbury, MN.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 7, 2006, 11 AM, at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 7 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971; Pastor Donald Schaefer will be officiating. Entombment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA on Monday, February 27 at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Lutheran Church of Our Savior Building Fund at the above noted address.
