Hugh Augustus Mallon III's Obituary
Hugh Augustus Mallon, III, age 76, of Lewes, DE, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Brandywine Senior Living under the care of hospice, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s and congestive heart failure. Born on October 25, 1946, in Arlington, MA, he was the son of Hugh A. Mallon, Jr. and Geraldine (McCarthy) Mallon.
He was a graduate of Towson High School in Towson, MD, and the University of Maryland, in College Park, MD. A proud veteran, Hugh served his country for five years in the United States Army. On December 16, 1972, in Baltimore, MD, he married the love of his life, Deborah Lentz Mallon, and together, they would spend the next fifty years creating a beautiful life and family.
Hugh began his career as an insurance agent at Connecticut Mutual, then became a General Agent in the Baltimore office at New England Life which led him to start his own business, Executive Compensations Concepts. At ECC, he was a Financial and Compensation Consultant which served independent schools, associations, and non-profit organizations. It was a career that was both challenging and fulfilling, and he forged many friendships through the years.
Hugh was an avid hockey player while growing up in Massachusetts and was taught how to play lacrosse in high school by his future brother-in-law, Skip Flanagan. Hugh was a member of the 1967 University of Maryland men’s lacrosse national championship team and was named All-American in lacrosse in 1968 and a member of the M Club, which was for varsity sports letter winners. Hugh played in the collegiate lacrosse North/South All-Star Game in 1969. After graduating from the University of Maryland, he played for the Mt. Washington Wolfpack Lacrosse team. During his time playing for Mt. Washington, the team was the winningest lacrosse team in club history.
He helped organize the U.S. Lacrosse World Games and was the co-founder of the National Junior Lacrosse Association Festival. Hugh was the Chairman and voice of the Pinball (Lacrosse) Classic. Hugh was also a youth lacrosse coach in Cockeysville, MD and assisted at Avon Old Farms Lacrosse camps. Hugh relished his time coaching lacrosse, but also was a mentor and inspired many on and off the lacrosse field.
Hugh was a devoted husband and father. Family was first for Hugh and he always kept in touch with his extended family and cherished the many family reunions that were held over the Thanksgiving holiday. In his spare time, Hugh enjoyed the comradery of playing golf and spending time with his three grandchildren.
Hugh is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah (Lentz) Mallon; his children, Lauren Mallon Davino, (Dr. Mark Davino) of Baltimore, MD, Brandon Mallon (Michelle) of Lewes, DE, and Meaghan Mallon of Philadelphia, PA; his grandchildren William Davino, Caroline Mallon, and Mackenzie Mallon; his sisters, Britt (Dr. Henry “Skip”) Flanagan of Chester, CT, Christine Warner (Steve) of Ocean Pines, MD, Mary Jane Wey (Steve) Wey of Montvale, NJ; his brother Greg Mallon of Pittsburgh, PA, and many loving nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, May 15, 2023, at 1:00 PM, at St. Edmond
Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE, where friends may visit an hour before the mass.
